Let's take back p2p!
Today the p2p filesharing world is dominated by programs which
- Are partly centralised and so suffer from a single point of failure (BitTorrent which relies on trackers to find new files),
- Aren't open to new ideas (LimeWire which is controlled by a company and follows their agenda),
- Try to do everything and do nothing really good (the problem of multi-network clients) or
- Are proprietary (unfree) software (why software should be free).
And as if that wouldn't be bad enough, p2p is more and more called to be able to do "more than just filesharing" or worse, people say it has "more uses than piracy".
Those people often try to hide (or don't realize) that filesharing
- Revolutionarizes the way we interact with data,
- Allows all people to publish anything they deem important with very little effort and
- Doesn't harm the media industry, but strongly benefits society,
Filesharing is a service which goes from people to people, and so it is the most important use of p2p technology for our society, and far more than a way to save bandwidth.
Whenever the use of p2p for filesharing is diminished, this steals a huge part of the meaning which p2p can have for our society.
So we want to reclaim this great technology for the people, and we hope you will help us take back p2p.
To reach this goal, Phex
- Offers free filesharing to all people (who want to take responsibility for their own actions),
- Welcomes new ideas (like i2p, download strategies, and many more),
- Gives its users the power to control how it works for them,
- Is free licensed (GPL),
- Helps to spread free files in Gnutella (with the Polar Skulk),
- Sticks to one network for one task and
- Is created by a community of developers, testers, forum moderators and artists (the Phex Development Group).
And we'd be glad to see you join in so we can take back p2p together.
